Not only is today Spooner’s birthday, but this is also the anniversary of a key Supreme Court ruling on women’s equality with regard to juries. On this date in 1942, the Supreme Court ruled in Glasser v. United States against a juror selectioin scheme in Illinois in which prerequisites for women’s participation were membership in the League of Women Voters and jury training provided by a local prosecutor. This did not settle the matter of women’s participation in juries, but it was the first SCOTUS majority opinion indicating that the jury was to be a fair “cross-section of the community”.
